Once you take the cells out of the calculator, be sure that the wires are still attached. Shine a light on the cells and use a voltmeter to determine which has the higher potential. Connect the cells in series for greater voltage or in parallel for a panel that can sustain a greater load.
If you inadvertently remove the wires, the strips on top of the cell are at high potential; the base is at low potential.
